Chair Of Governors
Welcome
It is my great pleasure to introduce myself as Chair of Governors of Ss. Peter and Paulβs Catholic Primary school. I live in New Brighton and love to take long walks up our fantastic promenade and can be often seen pushing my grandchildren on the swings in Vale Park or having a quiet coffee in one of the many cafes we have in our wonderful area. I retired 5 years ago having spent 36 years working as a teacher and Headteacher in 5 Catholic Primary Schools on the Wirral. I became a Governor of our School approximately 3 years ago and have more recently been privileged to be elected as Chair of Governors. I am a practising Catholic worshipping with the community of Holy Apostles and Martyrsβ Church which is, of course, the Schoolβs Parish Church.
I work with our team of Governors, who are all volunteers and are dedicated in their work to ensure that your children are safe, happy and receive the very best education while they are in our school. We are made up of a variety of people from various walks of life with a variety of skills and knowledge that help the Governors in their work. Two of our members are elected by the parents of the school, a teacher is elected by the staff, Foundation Governors are practising Catholics and are selected by the Bishop. Other representatives can be nominated by the Local Education Authority or Council.
The Governing body oversees the work of the school. We do this by visiting the school, talking to teachers and children and by setting the policies and procedures that ensure our school fulfils its statutory requirements. We regularly meet throughout the year and discuss organisational matters and the schoolβs standards and performance. We discuss our findings from visits to the school and work with the Headteacher to set strategies for future developments and to ensure that the life of Christ and his teachings are firmly at the centre, guiding us in all that we do.
Role of the Governing Body
Governors are people who wish to make a positive contribution to the school and the education of its children. They will contribute to the effective day-to-day running of the school and have an effective input towards the educational achievements of its pupils.
In a Catholic school, the governors have extra responsibilities. For example, they are the employer of the staff; and are responsible for pupil admissions. The Local Authority manages the Admissions Process on behalf of the governors.
A majority of our governors are called Foundation Governors; they are appointed by our Bishop, Mark Davies, to uphold the Catholic ethos of the school. Every 4 years, there is an election for a parent governor, where parents are invited to vote (in the case of more than 1 candidate)
Our Governors visit the school regularly β speaking to children, staff and parents. They observe learning, examine books, scrutinise data and compile reports.
